When sketching, the most important thing is to examine the illustration works from the perspective of geometric composition.

Step 01

You can draw a sketch on the draft directly with a pencil, or you can draw a sketch in PS. What I deduce here is the sketch in PS. Start with a few lines to sketch the shape of the street building.

We use a single point perspective in our paintings. Here, our style is hand-painted, so it is personalized, casual and natural. Therefore, it is not necessary to be completely strict, like an architect, to express perspective exactly, but the basic modeling framework is established. There may be differences in actual painting, but it does not affect the overall impression. What needs to be grasped here is the balance between rationality and sensibility.

Step 02

In the picture, you can see that the middle is blank, that’s right! Here we can arrange the leading characters. This character can hold an umbrella. Next, add some plant shapes around the characters to make the picture look richer. Plants do not need to be specific, as long as a general idea is drawn, and the free play part can be reserved for direct flat painting.

At this point, the sketch is complete.

Start to open PS, and create a new document of 2000 * 2574px. The color mode is cmyk.

Step 03

Create a new background color in the new document, which can be regarded as the color of the ground. What we need to use here is the “extra thick carbon pen” in the “dry medium brush”Brush“, this brush is suitable for large area painting, and the hand-painted brush can be lighter, so it also has the texture of a dry brush.

At this time, we painted the color of the first building, which is orange. The color of orange is very full, and it is also eye-catching as the main color, which is suitable for representing the warm picture atmosphere. In the corner part, the brush is too big to control, so you can replace it with a small brush to draw small details, which is like the “ultimate pastel party” in the dry medium painting brush.

Step 04

Continue to use the two brushes described in the previous step to paint other building blocks, and pay attention to the coordination between colors. Continue to increase the proportion of orange, and then add yellow and pink around orange as the auxiliary color of orange to increase the weight of warm colors in the color. At the same time, blue is also used as the highlight color, and orange is used as the contrast to strengthen the color tension in the picture.

Step 05

If you draw a building a little farther away, the color of the building will be white on a large area, and there will be more small blocks, which also conforms to the visual rules of perspective. In this step, we also need to stop to check the overall shape and color ratio. The color matching of the left and right sides, as well as the overall balance.

Note that when smearing, the combination of these two brushes can create an effect of “shape scattered and spirit not scattered”.
